Professional Portfolio
March 20, 2008How are you going with your portfolio assignment for Rob’s tutorial groups? I thought I had better get stuck into this assignment as soon as I can so I have some time to get my other assignments started and some substantial work done on them.
I have put my portfolio into some web pages and put them online. I’ve found a simple template that I can use and modify as I go. I am able to host my own pages so now I can publish them on the internet and modify them live, straight from the server.
I know from this morning’s tutorial that some of this group are also going to put their portfolio assignment onto a web page – and that some of you are not sure how to get your web pages hosted.
In order to write web pages you need to format your document in HTML format. This is not hard to do – you can ‘convert’ many types of documents into html. If you want to start from scratch you can find many programs that will edit and preview your ‘code’. HTML (hyper text markup language) is not really very hard to understand. You can write web pages with a simple text editor (like NotePad or WordPad) and your browser.
If you have your own internet access then your service provider usually provides you with an email account and a small amount of space for you to store web pages that your service provider will host (publish) on the net for you. You can also get ‘free’ pages with your Google or Yahoo account. Many other companies offer ‘free’ websites. You can get a free WordPress account at wordpress.com – there are sites that also include video channels and chat messaging. There are also many other social networking sites besides MySpace and FaceBook. You could just about put your portfolio into FaceBook; but I’m not sure if I would do that myself, even using a private group.
My portfolio can be seen at http://chrisloft.com/portfolio
if you would like to see the original template before I altered it you can do so at http://chrisloft.com/portfolio/pixelgreen.html to see the html code, just go to ‘view’ in your browser and select ’source’.
